Pilot released from hospital following crash at Sioux Falls airport, investigation planned

A pilot involved in a small aircraft crash at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport was released from the hospital, according to an airport official.

The pilot had "bumps and bruises," said Dan Letellier, the Sioux Falls Regional Airport Executive Director, after he crashed Friday around 5 p.m..

He was flying an L-19 aircraft, a retired vintage military plane, Letellier said. It was a private aircraft, not a part of the commemorative Air Force aircraft like Letellier had said when he was first reached for comment.

Letellier said he was not sure why the pilot went off the runway when he attempted to land because the conditions were good. The Federal Aviation Administration will conduct an investigation into the crash.

Some flights were delayed because of the crash, but runway operations were back to normal later in the evening.

It was the third incident involving a plane at the Sioux Falls airport in the past month.

Two F-16s ran off the runway in May, though there were no serious injuries, Air Guard officials said at the time.
