Pine Bush man indicted on murder charge, accused of shooting acquaintance of ex-girlfriend

A 26-year-old man was indicted on a second-degree murder charge for allegedly killing Michael Hankins last week in Shawangunk, the Ulster County District Attorney’s office said Tuesday.

Walter Post Jr., of Pine Bush, remained at the Ulster County Jail awaiting arraignment and bail determination in Ulster County Court, the district attorney's office said. A grand jury voted to indict Post Thursday.

On the early morning of Jan. 11, Post allegedly stalked his ex-girlfriend, according to the district attorney’s office. Hankins, 29, described as an acquaintance, was visiting her home at the time. State police last week said Hankins lived in Woodridge in Sullivan County.

Post allegedly disabled Hankins’ car. Hankins left the premises shortly after 1 a.m., stopping a short distance away on Vinegar Hill Road in Pine Bush.

Hankins was shot several times at close range outside of his car and was found on the roadside across from the car, according to the district attorney's office

With police activity that morning around his residence, Post surrendered without incident and state police took him into custody, according to the district attorney's office.
