Pine Hills residents call for changes to bus stops after women attacked

Pine Hills community members are working to make their bus stops safer after deputies said they arrested a 30-year-old suspect who confessed to preying on women at bus stops near Hiawassee Road earlier this year.

Residents plan to call for changes at a community meeting with Lynx on Tuesday.

Deputies said Nelson Odige, 30, first attacked a woman on New Year’s Day at a stop on Silver Star Road, then attacked two women on Feb. 2 on Hiawassee Road and another 23 days later on the same road. All of the attacks happened at dark hours in the early morning.

Ahead of Tuesday’s meeting, Lynx officials said Pine Hills stops have never had issues with safety and the Odige attacks were an isolated incident. The company said lighting is not its responsibility and that it tries to place stops by street lights and adds solar to covered stops.
