Pineville man to get life in prison for teen's murder; 2 more defendants face 2023 trials

A Pineville man convicted in the 2020 murder of a teen will be sentenced next week, but two defendants still face trial next year.

Andrew Chestley Mayo, 20, will be sentenced to mandatory life in prison after being found guilty on Nov. 18 in the second-degree murder of 17-year-old Edwin Davidson Jr., who in October 2020 was shot once in his head during what police said in previous hearings was revenge for a drug sale gone bad.

Police also testified in prior hearings Davidson was not involved in that deal and that, based on ballistics, they believed Mayo was the one who fired the shot that killed the teen.

On Oct. 20, 2020, a car filled with five people went to an Orchard Loop home in Pineville. Three of those people − Mayo, Terrence Armstrong, and Tyrone Markel Compton − began shooting at the home, according to previous testimony.

One of those bullets went into the house and struck Davidson, who died at the scene. No one else at the home was injured.

Kaitlyn Carlino hearing:Bond reduced for teen accused in Pineville homicide

During a March 2021 hearing, Pineville Police Department Detective Katy McBride testified that the group had gone to Orchard Loop because they felt cheated in a drug deal some of them had been involved in not long before.

They paid $90 for what they thought were 13 Xanax pills. McBride testified five were Xanax pills, while the rest were balled-up pieces of paper.

"They were extremely upset," McBride said. "They wanted to get revenge."

Mayo, Armstrong, Compton, Pamela Earlene Smith, and Kaitlyn Leeann Carlino later were indicted on charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and three counts of criminal conspiracy.

Mayo only was tried on the murder charge. Smith and Carlino took plea bargains and pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit second-degree murder. Armstrong and Compton have trials set for Feb. 27, 2023.

Carlino is set to be sentenced on Dec. 12. Smith was sentenced in June 2021 to 20 years in prison.
