A Pink Moon Arrives on Friday — Here's What That Means for You

Full moons aren't just beautiful — they're the end of the lunar cycle and a time to reflect on what's happened over the past 28 days. Here's what Friday's pink moon means for you.

Each month, we’re led deeper and deeper into our personal cosmic cycles through the moon. She begins her 28-day journey in the new moon phase, when no light from the sun reflects off her surface, but it’s during the full moon that we get to witness our Lady Luna’s fullest light. April’s full moon, in particular, is special for a few reasons: Not only is it the pink moon, it’s also the second full moon in Libra, following March’s full moon in the same sign.

Why is it called the “pink moon”?

Before iPhones and the Internet, indigenous people would use the moon to help them keep track of the seasons. Each full moon had a different name to reflect what was going on during that particular season, according to The Farmer’s Almanac. April’s full moon is always named the pink moon because of the moss-pink flowers that appear during early spring. This moon is also known as the sprouting grass moon, the egg moon, and the fish moon.

When’s the best time to see it?

The full pink moon will reach its peak fullness on Friday, April 19, at 7:12 p.m. EST. However, you can see the moon on the night of the 18th in all its glory, shining brightly in the sky. Though this full moon won’t actually be pink (I know, we’re sad about it, too), it is sure to shine and remind us of the power of the celestial bodies.

What do full moons represent?

The full moon is the energetic peak of the moon’s cycle and is a time when we can focus on manifesting, connecting to our intuition, and honing in on our spiritual practice. This phase is when we’re plugged in fully to the power of the moon, which rules over the subtle energetic body, our intuition, our connection to our inner world, shadows and emotions.

If there’s something you need to clear up, it could be that’s what this full moon is meant to help with.

While the new moon is the start of a cycle, it is the full moon that represents its peak. Full moons also represent completions and endings, so you may be feeling a few different things during the pink moon phase.

And what does this full pink moon mean for us?

If there’s something you feel has been miscommunicated or that you need to clear up right now, it could very well be that that’s what this full moon is meant to help with. Writer and astrologer-in-residence for Bumble Amelia Quint describes this full moon as a relationship checkpoint that’s going to illuminate just how far you’ve come with a special flame or in a particular connection.

“This moon is at 29 degrees, which is the end of the sign, so something close to your heart is coming to fruition or reaching a natural conclusion. Maybe you've finally balanced out a tricky power dynamic and things are running smoothly, or maybe you need to speak up and switch things up," she explains. Clearly, regardless of what you need to work through, the key is communication. She continues, saying, "Mars in Gemini will keep the conversation flowing."

And whether the pink moon is making you want to go out and be seen or stay at home with some ice cream and Netflix, the best thing you can do is expect the unexpected and try to remain present through it all. With Uranus opposite the full moon in Libra, Quint explains that we may be receiving some surprising news as well — however, we shouldn’t be so quick to assume that it’s a bad thing. “If you've been unhappy with the status quo, this will probably feel refreshing. Sometimes little shocks like this one are just the universe helping you course correct. All you can do is pay attention and go where you feel called,” she says.

No matter what this full moon asks of us, may we be present and use it to call in all that helps us grow, and let go of what’s holding us back.
