Pioneer retreat offers support to families and caregivers

ROSS COUNTY – Parents and caregivers of children with disabilities gathered at Creekside Occasions recently for the Ross County Family Support Retreat offered by the Pioneer Center. The retreat was made possible by a grant from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities and offered dynamic speakers, education, childcare and self-care activities.

“We were thrilled to offer an afternoon of education, empowerment, connection and self-care to the families we serve,” said Superintendent of the Pioneer Center, Amy Beeler.

The keynote speaker, Sarah Buffie of Soul Bird Consulting, spoke about how trauma affects the brain and body, providing effective approaches for developing resilience and mindfulness. Families were invited to utilize a human library to learn more about the support system within their community, checking out experts on education, county board services, parent support groups, and therapy services. Maggie’s Farm & Aromatics and Grounded Educational Plant Bar provided fun self-care activities.

Families of children or adults with developmental disabilities are encouraged to contact the Ross County Board of DD at 740-773-8044 any time they need support.

The Pioneer Center, otherwise known as Ross County Board of DD (RCBDD), exists for the purpose of improving the quality of life for citizens who have a developmental disability.
