Pipe bombs discovered in Cambria during fugitive manhunt

CAMBRIA — Authorities discovered two pipe bombs and a number of firearms during a subsequent search after arresting a wanted fugitive Tuesday, Jan. 10, in Cambria.

The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called in to dispose of the pipe bombs on site, rather than store them in police evidence lockers.

The Hillsdale County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said late Friday that their office has yet to receive a report on the matter and therefore no criminal charges have been issued in relation to the pipe bombs.

Police from multiple agencies including the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office, the Michigan State Police, Region of Irish Hills Narcotics Office and Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team tracked down a wanted fugitive to the home who was wanted on unrelated warrants for home invasion from last October.

The suspect in that case, identified as 35-year-old Michael Lyon of Hillsdale, barricaded himself in the home initially but eventually surrendered without incident.

A subsequent search of the home led to the discovery of the two pipe bombs.

Hillsdale County Sheriff Scott Hodshire said a news release with additional information is anticipated to be released as soon as detectives are done with their preliminary investigation, and they would be seeking criminal charges in the matters.

Lyon was arraigned Wednesday, Jan. 11, in 2B District Court on two counts of first-degree home invasion and is scheduled for preliminary hearings on those charges within the next three weeks.

He previously served a prison term for breaking and entering a building with intent and was discharged from parole on Feb. 23, 2022, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections Offender Tracking Information System.
