The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed right-hander Parker Markel off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Saturday and are sending him to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Markel, 28, had been designated for assignment by the Mariners on Tuesday.
He started the season with Double-A Arkansas before getting promoted to Triple-A Tacoma two weeks into the season. He has pitched in 22 games with Tacoma, picking up eight saves with a 2.60 ERA and 44 strikeouts. He was also named a Triple-A All-Star.
For the Mariners, Markel pitched in five games this season -- four during a nine-game stretch in May and one game earlier this month. He has pitched 4 2/3 innings during those contests with an ERA of 15.43.
Markel spent the 2018 in the independent American Association after not playing organized baseball in 2017.
The Pirates transferred right-hander Rookie Davis from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL to free up a 40-man roster spot.
