Diamondbacks vs. Tigers

When: 1:10 p.m., Sunday

Where: Chase Field.

Pitchers: Diamondbacks TBA vs. Tigers RHP Beau Brieske (1-6, 4.07).

TV/Radio: Bally Sports Arizona/KMVP-FM (98.7), KHOV-FM (105.1).

The Diamondbacks still have not announced a starter for Sunday. Luke Weaver struggled last week in his audition for the fifth starter’s spot, earning a demotion to the bullpen. The most likely candidate to fill his spot is former AL Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel, whom Arizona signed earlier this month to a minor league contract. Keuchel has started twice in the Arizona Complex League. The other possible option is Corbin Martin, who has a 4.40 ERA in 14 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. He’s currently in Triple-A Reno. … Brieske is a Valley native and graduated from Gilbert Perry in 2016. … He made his major league debut in April. … This month, Brieske has a 2.28 ERA in four starts. … Brieske primarily uses a four-seam fastball, change-up and slider. He also mixes in an occasional curveball and sinker.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Detroit Tigers, at Chase Field

Tigers update: At 26-43, only four teams in baseball have fewer wins than the Tigers. They have been decimated by injuries, particularly to their starting rotation, and their offense has been inept, averaging just 2.87 runs per game, the lowest of any team since the 1968 Chicago White Sox. LHP Tarik Skubal, whom the Diamondbacks are not scheduled to face, has been their best starter, posting a 3.63 ERA in 14 starts. Skubal went to high school in Kingman. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez, one of their top free-agent additions in the offseason, has spent time on the injured list and is currently away from the team for personal reasons. RHP Michael Pineda is working his way back from a broken finger but has been out for more than a month. 1B Spencer Torkelson, the Arizona State product who was the No. 1 overall pick in 2020, is struggling in his rookie year, hitting.191 with a .291 slugging in 63 games.
