Pirates update: After going 19-41 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and losing 101 games last year, the Pirates are off to a relatively encouraging 21-27 start. They finished May with a 12-14 record and have won five of their last eight entering play Wednesday. They’ve struggled offensively, scoring just 3.5 runs per game — the worst mark in the National League. Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes has been the Pirates’ most productive hitter, with a .293 batting average and a .762 OPS in 164 at-bats. Centerfielder Bryan Reynolds has struggled to get on base, but provides a power threat with a team-high seven homers so far. Their pitching has been slightly better, but the team’s cumulative ERA of 4.50 is still the third-worst in the National League. Left-hander Jose Quintana has been the Pirates’ most effective starter with a 2.15 ERA in nine starts. The Diamondbacks will miss his turn in the rotation.
