A Pittsburgh legend and Olympian who died at the age of 101 last week was honored in Oakland on Wednesday.

The Hazelwood native and Pitt alumnus was honored by his fellow Olympians and business colleagues, who all gave moving tributes.

The celebration of life was filled with heartwarming stories, emotion and lots of laughter was poignantly fitting to honor the athlete.

Every speaker shared the same theme when they talked about Douglas: “When you make an impact - you create a legacy.”

They all talk about how Herb brought out the best in everyone, how he was a champion in everything he did while wanting to champion others and how when he spoke, people listened.

Of all the stories and memories shared Wednesday afternoon, one quote seemed to sum things up perfectly.

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give your gift away. That’s Herb and that’s what he’s done for all of us.”
