Pitt gets verbal commitment from 6-7 prep school forward Nate Santos

Apr. 7—Pitt coach Jeff Capel took the first major step in rebuilding his roster Tuesday when he received a verbal commitment from 6-foot-7 forward Nate Santos of the Loomis Chaffee (Conn.) School, ESPN recruiting analyst Adam Finkelstein reported.

Santos, rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, is the first member of the class of 2021 to commit to Pitt. He is ranked 228th in the nation overall by 247Sports.com.

He has scholarship offers from several schools, including TCU, Dayton, Creighton, Georgetown, Illinois, Xavier and Virginia Tech. While Capel is looking closely at the NCAA transfer portal after five players decided to transfer, he offered Santos a scholarship March 29.

If he signs a Pitt letter of intent, Santos would become the ninth member of the team on scholarship, although that number could drop to seven.

Justin Champagnie, who led the ACC in rebounding and was second in scoring this season, could opt to enter the NBA Draft. Freshman John Hugley was suspended for most of the 2020-2021 season and his future at Pitt remains unclear.
