Pittsburgh baby receives life-saving treatment after being diagnosed with RSV, pneumonia

A baby is at Children’s Hospital getting treatment, but at one point, the mom did not know if her daughter was going to be OK.

8-week-old Amy Rogers is a baby girl who has proven to be quite the fighter after she was diagnosed with RSV and pneumonia.

“You’re just waiting there thinking, is my daughter going to be OK?” said Lauren Rogers

Rogers and her family are from Pittsburgh, but now live in West Virginia, which is where they first brought Amy. Her symptoms got worse.

She was having a hard time breathing, it was very labored, coloring in her face completely changed. Her lips were turning blue. Not really moving and just whimpering.

Doctors told Rogers that her baby girl needed to be airlifted to a hospital — but the issue was finding a room.

They initially called Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown and said they had a bed and came back 20 minutes later saying “oh no there’s actually no bed and no bed in Children’s in Pittsburgh, and look into Akron, Ohio.”

Then they came back a little bit later and said there was a bed after all in Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

A spokesperson for Children’s said they are seeing a steady uptick in RSV and other respiratory illnesses, and UPMC Children’s has the capacity to treat any child needing care.

Earlier this week, the hospital put up an outdoor tent to deal with a surge in RSV cases and at one point, the wait time was 15 hours. Rogers feels lucky her daughter got the care and treatment she desperately needed.

Rogers told me her baby girl may get discharged from the hospital today or tomorrow.
