Pittsburgh gearing up for another jam-packed weekend of events

The City of Pittsburgh is gearing up for another jam-packed weekend of events, and preparations are already underway for the thousands of people coming into town, including West Virginia University football fans who will make their way to Acrisure Stadium for the Backyard Brawl.

University of Pittsburgh football fans told Channel 11 they’ve been looking forward to this weekend for years.

But the Backyard Brawl isn’t the only event happening in the Steel City this weekend. Ribfest preparations are already underway on the North Shore, where football fans will be able to grab some BBQ before heading in for the big game. Also on Thursday night, Michael Buble is performing at PPG Paints Arena downtown. Then, on Labor Day, Air Force One will touch down, as President Joe Biden arrives in town.

“We’re really excited. This is an opportunity to bring tens of thousands of people into our city, from the big game to Labor Day to Ribfest — it’s an exciting time for Pittsburgh,” said Maria Montaño, press secretary for Mayor Ed Gainey’s office.

Montaño said several other multi-event weekends have been successful this summer, thanks to the cooperation of those who attended. She said extra patrols will be in place throughout the city Thursday night, as well as on Monday for the president’s visit.

“We’ll be working hand in hand with our public safety folks and the White House and their plans for that visit,” Montaño said.

Ribfest starts at noon on Thursday. The Backyard Brawl kickoff is at 7 p.m.
