Pittsburgh, Greensburg bishops say meat is OK on St. Patrick’s Day — this year

The Diocese of Pittsburgh and Diocese of Greensburg have announced dispensation for Catholics from the obligation to abstain from meat on St. Patrick’s Day.

Lent, which began Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday, April 6, calls for Catholics over 14 to abstain from eating meat on Fridays.

Saint Patrick’s Day, which celebrates the memory of the missionary apostle, falls on a Friday this year.

So, Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh and Bishop Larry Kulick of Greensburg permit Catholics to observe the day with another choice of penance rather than to abstain from meat.
