BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — MLB’s Spring Training opened across the league on Monday, bringing the Pittsburgh Pirates to their longtime Spring home in Bradenton, Fla.

To commemorate the beginning of Spring Training, the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted unanimously to name part of 27th Street East “Roberto Clemente Memorial Way.”

The ceremony will occur at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pirate City. The Clemente family, members of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, and county officials will join the celebration.

Clemente played for the Pirates for 18 years, winning two World Series, appearing in 15 all-star games, and winning the 1971 Most Valuable Player Award. Clemente, who was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1973, died in a plane crash while delivering supplies to Nicaragua after an earthquake in 1972 at the age of 38.

The section of the roadway dedicated to Clemente will go from SR 64 to 38th Avenue East, and will include the installation of Memorial signage at key locations and intersections along the corridor.
