Some Pittsburgh Public School students expected to ride Port Authority buses in upcoming school year

The Pittsburgh Public School District announced that some students will have to ride Port Authority buses in the upcoming school year.

An email to parents said that middle school students who attend St. Bede School and St. Edmund’s Academy are the students asked to take the Port Authority buses.

The changes in transportation are said to be the result of a shortage of bus drivers. The move to Port Authority for these students is expected to reduce the number of yellow buses needed by the school district.

“Due the nationwide school bus driver shortage, the District has increased its use of Port Authority over time. Currently, about 4,500 students in grades 6-12 use Port Authority to travel to and from school. On May 25, the Board approved the addition of 6-8 grade students from St. Edmonds and St. Bede’s for the 2022-2023 school year. The District has verified the capacity of Port Authority to accommodate these additional students, prior to making its recommendation. Notification of these changes for next school year have been shared with families to allow time to plan and practice routines with students,” said Ebony Pugh, a representative for Pittsburgh Public Schools.

The school district said that it anticipates transporting close to 17,596 students to and from school each day.

Parents who would prefer to drive their children to school and those who wish to carpool with other families are asked to file a ticket with the district. If you would like to file a ticket, you can call 412-529-4357 or visit this website.

Several apps are available to help families who will be moving to Port Authority buses, including Transit, PGH Transit and Moovit. These apps track the time and location of the buses and their routes.
