Pittsburgh Regional Transit expects to spend nearly $118 million to buy more than 100 new buses

Pittsburgh Regional Transit expects to spend nearly $118 million to buy more than 100 new buses over the next two years.

The transit board’s performance oversight committee approved a 5-year contract to buy 107 60-foot buses in 2023, including 15 electric buses that will improve the service between Oakland and downtown Pittsburgh. The contract also includes the purchase of 30 clean diesel 40-foot buses in 2024 and the option to buy 300 more buses after that.

The two bus providers under the contract are Gillig and New Flyer.

The agency has a current fleet of about 720 buses. If it buys all the buses, it will replace more than half its fleet.

The transit spokesperson said a lot of the buses are 12 years old or have been driven more than 500,000 miles.

He said the agency buys new buses every year, but this is a very large order. Some riders think it’s a good idea.

“I feel like the old buses we ride on they are beat up stains from last year,” said Jeremy Whittington.

The transit board will vote on the new contract on Friday.
