Pittsburghers rally in support of Roe v. Wade in Hill District

All across the nation Saturday, people took to the streets to rally for rights upheld by Roe v. Wade.

These rallies come on the heels of the leak from the Supreme Court that would roll back federal abortion protections.

One of those rallies took place at Freedom Square in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, focusing on elevating minority voices.

Participants called it the “Rally for Roe.” Nearly 200 people came out on a cold, rainy day to support abortion rights.

11 News saw dozens and dozens of signs suporting abortion rights.

Organizers told Channel 11 that they fight for rights in this community every week, not just this week.

“The idea is not to just be here today,” said Daeja Baker. “It’s to be here every day and hear us every day. This is just the beginning.”

Organized by Sisters Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Feminists for Intersectionality and Radical Youth Collective, abortion activists and members of the community joined in.

The group told Channel 11 that what’s not making headlines is how the overturning of Roe v. Wade would harm not only women, but the LGBTQ+ community as well as transgender and nonbinary people, who can also experience pregnancy.

“A lot of the headlines I have seen have not been inclusive to trans bodies and nonbinary bodies,” said organizer Ciora Thomas. “That definitely needs to change. That’s another reason we are here today, to send that message of inclusivity. Trans people should definitely be considered when thinking about abortion rights.”

Saturday’s event comes just one day after a rally in Westmoreland County, where hundreds of people showed up to hear former President Donald Trump and senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz talk. Trump spoke in support of the anti-abortion movement, but only briefly.

“We will protect innocent life,” Trump said. “We will defend our Constitution and we will defend the Second Amendment. We will proudly uphold the Judeo-Christian values and principles of our nation’s founding.”
