Swimming: Pittsford's Daley Fraser, Victor's Alex Crossing cap careers with state titles

Daley Fraser, a senior on the Pittsford Panthers team, left no doubt that he is the top high school boys diver in the state.

Fraser won the diving state title, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championship, Friday at Ithaca College.

Niskayuna senior Conor Compton was a distant second after Fraser produced an 11-dive score of 582.60. Compton finished with a 508.65, Irondequoit junior Michael Wood 505.15.

Fraser's first state title — and the first diving state title for a Pittsford Panther — came with a notable and sizeable gap of 73.95 points between him and the runner-up from Section II.

"Ever since I started in high school this has always been my goal," Fraser said after competing in his third state meet. "It means a lot to me to finish on top."

Victor's Alex Crossing swims in a preliminary heat of the 200 yard freestyle during the 2022 NYSPHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving Championships in Ithaca, N.Y., Friday, March 4, 2022.

Alex Crossing, a senior at Victor, joined Fraser as a state champion on the meet's second and final day, winning the 500-yard freestyle final.

Crossing's race in 4 minutes, 31.05 seconds was faster than anyone who swam with a team affiliated with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association or not, also making him a Federation or overall state champion.

Rush-Henrietta sophomore Evan Peters was the NYSPHSAA runner-up in the 200 freestyle. Pittsford's 400 relay of sophomore Lucas Golembiewski, senior Patrick Lang, senior Adrian Braun and sophomore Timothy Fan also finished second. Their time of 3:10.89 was third-fastest in the Federation results.

Fraser, who attends Mendon, has won the Section V Class A diving title each of the last three seasons, but the 2021 state meet was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. His previous best finish at states was seventh-place.

"From day of this season everybody has been chasing him," Pittsford coach Rick Schmitt said. "When you are the favorite, there is a lot of pressure."

Fraser, like Crossing, received two medals, one as the winner of the NYSPHSAA title and one for finishing at the top of the Federation standings. A University of Pittsburgh recruit, Fraser also received a large mini-billboard with the words "state champion."

"I'll put the (billboard) up in my room," Fraser said. "I'll definitely have that with me for a while."
