Pittston St. Patrick’s Parade line painting

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — On this Presidents’ Day we’re in full swing for the 11th annual Pittston St. Patrick’s Parade.

Workers were out in full force painting the green line on Main Street in Pittston. It’s a tradition that begins the countdown to the upcoming Pittston St. Patrick’s Parade on March 2.

“Last week we had our Irish Flags hung on Main Street, today we’re gonna paint our green line and green shamrocks and we’re so excited because this is kind of, to me, like the official kickoff,” said Sarah Donahue, Co-Chair, Pittston St. Patrick’s Parade Committee.

Donahue is co-chair of the parade committee. A full roster of parade activities is planned for this upcoming weekend.

“This weekend actually is our first weekend of parade activities. We have our Little Miss & Mister Pittston Leprechaun contest at noon at the Pittston Library. You can still enter your children online or in person that day. Look at our Facebook for more information. And then Saturday night the 24th we have our pub crawl which kicks off the spirit for the holiday itself,” Donahue added.

90 groups have signed up for the parade so far, and there have been a lot of new applicants this year.

“The Committee has done a wonderful job I think building a family-oriented event. It’s a great opportunity to come downtown and after the parade, hit some of the other spots that exist here in our downtown,” explained Mayor Mike Lombardo, City of Pittston.

For now, organizers are hoping the “Luck of the Irish” will bring nice weather on “Parade Day.”

“Hopefully we put on a really nice day for people in Greater Pittston and beyond,” Donahue continued.

Scranton’s St. Patrick’s Parade steps off on Saturday, March 9, and the City of Wilkes-Barre will host its parade the following day, Sunday, March 10.
