Pizza at this new ‘hidden gem’ is just ‘so damn good,’ Boise! Now it’s a bakery, too

Black Moon has earned a fast following as a pizza restaurant in the Boise area.

Opened five months ago, it ranks 4.9 out of 5.0 stars on Google. Reviewers call it a “hidden gem,” describe the pizza as “incredible” and make mouthwatering confessions like, “It was so damn good we HAD to get one to-go.”

But co-owner Barry Faught always meant for it to be more than just an artisanal pizza joint.

Launching the second part of his plan, Black Moon, 3709 W. Chinden Blvd., unveiled baked goods Thursday.

Located in the former Sportscard Fanatic spot next to Section 37 Axe Room, Black Moon is now targeting a morning crowd to go along with the evening pizza crew. It opens at 7 a.m. As “Phase 1” of the bakery plan, Black Moon is rolling out a modest initial menu: items such as scones, cookies, madeleines, cinnamon cardamom buns and tea cakes.

Broadcast Coffee will be poured. Black Moon and Broadcast Coffee, 1100 W. Idaho St., both are co-owned by Faught, a Boise native who now lives in Seattle.

Black Moon hopes to unveil Phase 2 of its bakery plan in about a month, Faught said. That will include more pastries, plus breakfast sandwiches and breads.

A Phase 3 “hopefully” will have croissants, he added. When will that happen? “Not totally sure yet — but aiming for late spring!”

In the meantime, it might be wise to show up early if you want to taste Black Moon’s baked goods. If the enthusiasm level is anything like it is for the pizza, morning treats might not last long.

“We aren’t exactly sure what the demand will be right away,” Black Moon explained on social media, ”so we’re taking it easy on how many baked goods we’ll be doing each day, and we’ll adjust as we go.”
