Pizzeria inside Hegedorns to relocate. Plus, an update on future plans for grocery store building

Guida’s Pizzeria in Webster is on the move after 14 years.

The shop, located at 964 Ridge Road in the same building as the soon-to-close Hegedorns Market, is shutting down Saturday, June 17, and in mid-July will reopen about a mile away at 160 W. Main St., formerly home to Martino’s Pizzeria, according to Lyn Stanton of Guida’s.

The status of the Webster Guida’s, which has a large entryway that opens to Hegedorns’ front end, had been in question since late March, when the store’s owners announced plans to shut down after 70 years in business.

Two other retailers — Webster Wine & Spirits and Warren’s Paint and Decorating — also are within the Hegedorns building footprint but have entirely separate entrances.

On Thursday, Jonathan Gonzalez, who manages Hegedorns and is the grandson of founder Bruce Hegedorn, said the supermarket’s last day of full operations will be Sunday, June 25.

“We will continue to stay open partially from Monday, June 26, to Thursday, June 29, as we sell off grocery items at a large discount,” he said. “We are also working closely with Foodlink to provide a significant donation to the local community on June 30.”

After the store closes, the space will be divided into several tenant spaces, he said, one of which will be taken by Webster Wine & Spirits, owned by a Hegedorn family member. (Warren’s Paint and Decorating isn’t moving.)

One of the other spaces could be filled by a Bill Gray’s Restaurant and Tap Room — at least, that is being evaluated, he said. The Hegedorn family owns roughly two dozen local Bill Gray’s and Tom Wahl’s restaurants, and Bill Gray’s is the entity that now owns the Hegedorns building, he said.

“There will be room for additional tenants which we haven’t finalized yet,” he said. “The plans are a work in progress, and we will have a more concrete direction in the near future.”

The last full day of operations for Hegedorns Market will be Sunday, June 25. The store will be partially opened from Monday, June 26, to Thursday, June 29, for sales, said manager Jonathan Gonzalez.

Guida’s has two other pizza shops, one in Irondequoit and one in Gates.

Martino’s Pizzeria, in existence for nearly 40 years, closed May 27, citing staff shortages and rising costs.

Back in March, Gonzalez said difficult market conditions led to the decision to close Hegedorns, which employs 120 people.

“It's a tough gig to be an independent grocer now,” he said. “It’s sad but, it’s been a great run. This business has come to an end of its life cycle.”
