'That place is cursed': Read how people reacted to the American Dream helicopter collapse

The latest mishap at American Dream megamall — this time the collapse of a decorative helicopter — spawned hundreds of reactions online. It was another unfortunate incident at a place that hasn't caught very many breaks since opening in 2019.

The helicopter, which was suspended over a pool at the mall's DreamWorks Water Park, became detached and collapsed at around 3 p.m. Sunday. Four people were injured, though just one was taken to the hospital for further treatment.

A NorthJersey.com Facebook post with a link to the original story about the collapse received more than 200 comments.

"That place is cursed," one comment, which received 28 likes, said.

Maybe it was cursed from the start, considering the pandemic hit months after it finally opened.

Indeed, Sunday's collapse is not the first incident to plague American Dream, which was recently sued by lenders for more than $380 million.

"It appears that the entire place needs an inspection," another commenter wrote. "That’s a good idea after what’s been happening."

This is the first major incident at the water park, but the mall's indoor ski slope, Big Snow, has been the site of two unfortunate incidents in the past year-and-a-half. In December, snowboarded died after falling backward and hitting his head. In October 2021, a fire broke out at Big Snow, forcing it to shut down for eight months.

As one commenter put it: "This place has bad luck."

Other commenters and posters, who said they were there when it happened, described the scene with words like "scary" and "chaos."

Could the place be haunted, as one commenter suggested? Well, someone connected the happenings to an infamous Meadowlands urban legend.

Before it was demolished in 2010, the old Giants Stadium was believed by some to be the final resting place of a certain disappeared former teamsters union leader. Could his spirit be responsible for the happenings?

"My guess would be it's Jimmy Hoffa and it’s disturbing his rest," a commenter posited.

An opportunistic real estate agent also commented his contact information on the post, asking if anyone was looking to move after witnessing the collapse.

On Twitter, videos of the aftermath of the collapse received thousands of views. In one video, people can be seen crowding the wave pool as lifeguards' whistles sounded.

Another Tweeter likened American Dream to a former New Jersey institution.

"Is American Dream Mall the new Action Park?" he asked.

The collapse got significant media attention as well, including from national outlets like NBC News and the Associated Press.

According to a Facebook post from a woman at the water park Sunday, American Dream offered those in attendance the choice between a free return visit in the next 12 months or a full refund.

The park is currently closed, due to an order from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, until an investigation is complete. Perhaps it will uncover whether or not the ghost of Jimmy Hoffa is responsible.

It's unclear when the water park will reopen and it's unclear if the mall's luck will ever improve.
