Placer County Sheriff’s reopen 1985 cold case

(FOX40.COM) — The Placer County Sheriff’s Office are digging back into a nearly 40-year-old cold case that has given investigators little in terms of cause of death and potential suspects over the decades.

While hunting near Boole Road in Applegate two men were chasing after their dog that had run off into some dense brush when they found a human skeleton.

The men had located the remains of Patricia Ann Rose who had last been seen in 1980, according to the sheriff’s office.

When her remains were first discovered the condition of the body left law enforcement unable to easily identify Rose.

The remains were sent to Chico State to assist in the determination of the remains.

Anthropologists were able to determine that the remains were female and had a facial reconstruction created.

After further investigation to see if the remains matched any missing persons came up negative the remains were then sent to the Department of Justice Lab in 2005.

DNA analysis and familiar comparison was conducted but came back with a negative result.

A third-party lab, specializing in genetic genealogy, conducted further lab work on Roses’ remains and were able to create a genetic genealogy profile.

A family tree was generated from the profile and provided to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office where detectives were able to track down a living relative to Woodburn, Oregon.

Detectives made contact with the relative who provided a reference sample that was then sent back to the DOJ.

The Oregon woman was determined to be Roses’ sister, who told detectives that Rose went missing in Sacramento in 1980.

With a fresh lead in the case detectives were able to gain more personnel information about Rose.

Relatives said that she went by the first name “Torrie” and “Patti” along with the last names “Bowden” and “Anderson.”

Rose no longer had a relationship with her husband at the time of her disappearance.

“The circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death are suspicious, and detectives are seeking the public’s help for any possible information regarding Patricia’s death or disappearance,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release.
