Plainfield officials ‘deeply concerned’ after student stabbed, loaded gun found at school

PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield High School student was taken to the hospital Wednesday after being stabbed during an altercation at a local park.

The stabbing occurred the same day a loaded gun was discarded in a dumpster on the property of the Cedarbrook K-8 Center, school officials said.

According to the school district, a Plainfield High School student was involved in a violent altercation at a local park Wednesday afternoon. The district did not identify the name of the park. The student was given immediate emergency medical attention and transported to the hospital for treatment, district officials said.

"We are fully cooperating with law enforcement to ensure a thorough and comprehensive inquiry. The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority, and we are taking this incident very seriously. We will provide support and counseling services for any students who may be affected by this incident," the district said in a statement.

In a separate incident, the district reported that at about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday a loaded gun was discovered at the Cedarbrook K-8 Center. The district reported the incident involved unidentified individuals who allegedly dropped the weapon into a dumpster on school property.

"The discovery of this weapon prompted immediate action from our school administration, our Division of Safety and Security, and the Plainfield Police Department," the district's statement said. "We want to assure our community that there was no direct threat to students or staff on the premises, and our security measures were quickly and effectively implemented."

Both incidents are under investigation by the Plainfield Police Department and the school district.

"Safety protocols were followed, and our staff's quick response to this situation ensured the safety of all students and staff at Cedarbrook K-8 Center," the district's statement said. "The Plainfield Public School District remains committed to maintaining the safety and well-being of our students, and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to address these incidents. We encourage anyone with information about either of these events to come forward and assist in the investigations."

The school district added it will not tolerate any actions that jeopardize the safety of students and staff and will continue to implement and enhance safety measures to ensure that schools remain secure environments for learning.
