Plains boys capture 2A state cross country title

The Plains boys captured the Class 2A state cross country championship on Friday afternoon at Round Rock.

The Cowboys narrowly edged second-place Tenaha for the state title, totaling 72 points to Tenaha's 79.

Jhoan Menjivar, who sat out Plains' playoff-clinching football victory on Thursday to rest up for the state meet, led the Cowboys with an eighth-place finish. He crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 21.50 seconds.

Sawyer Hamilton wound up 12th overall at 17:39.70. Adrian Contreras, who caught the game-winning touchdown in Thursday afternoon's football game, was 32nd, Christian Sanchez 34th and Xavier Felan 66th to push Plains to the state championship.

New Home's Jackson Martinez came in 10th in a time of 17:24.00.

Farwell's Isabella Jaime and Plains' Analley Moreno earned top-10 finishes in the 2A girls race. Jaime came in fifth in a time of 12:46.30 while Moreno was ninth at 13:00.50. Kiley Barrera of Plains was 11th and Miranda Sosa of New Deal 12th.

New Deal wound up sixth in the 2A girls team standings with 161 points.
