Plains event focuses on family heritage

Jul. 26—Families and friends filled Fred Young Park in Plains in celebration of pioneer heritage on Saturday.

Over 100 residents from across Sanders County, including the Wakkien family visiting from Florida, enjoyed a free dinner of pulled pork and took advantage of several children's games under shady trees during a hot afternoon.

Tucked under one of the shady trees were volunteers helping those interested in researching their family history. Volunteers Kathy and Dwight Bowen spent the afternoon with individuals wanting help in researching family ancestors.

The Bowens bring over 50 years of family history experience. They said that the online website they use has over 1 billion digital data images online to help researchers find their ancestors. Most people can find their ancestors on the free website called Family Search.

FamilySearch is dedicated to preserving important family records and making them freely accessible online to everyone. Their work is worldwide and has involved collaborations with more than 10,000 organizations in over 100 countries.

While families enjoyed their meals under the shade trees of the park, Hondo Ryan provided music and a chance to dance with your favorite partner.

Those interested in continuing their family search can attend the local family search center free of charge at 1021 South Central Ave in Plains. The Family Search Center is open during Monday's noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. or by appointment by calling Bowen at 406-826-4580 or her cell at 406-529-1479.

Food, games, and music were provided by volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Plains.
