North Mac football player wins The State Journal-Register high school athlete of the week

North Mac football player Reed Lewis won The State Journal Register's athlete of the week award.

Lewis earned 46 percent of the 40,733 votes, beating out Staunton boys soccer player Luke DeWitt (30 percent). Full results are below.

The senior running back/defensive back totaled nine carries for 98 yards and two TDs in North Mac's 40-7 South Central Conference win over Vandalia on Friday. He also nabbed an interception with under a minute left in the first half to set up a Kaden Brown touchdown pass to Logan Hammann at the buzzer for a 20-7 halftime lead.

Natalie Alexander, Chatham Glenwood volleyball

The junior hitter led the Titans with seven kills and nine blocks and sparked a nonconference win over Williamsville after losing the first set, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18, on Thursday.

Peyton Bergschneider, Pleasant Plains volleyball

The senior outside hitter posted eight digs, five kills and one ace to lead Pleasant Plains to a nonconference win over Sacred Heart-Griffin 25-17, 25-17 on Wednesday.

Darren Booth, Rochester boys soccer

The senior midfielder netted the game-winning goal with 2 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the second half and Rochester defeated Alton 2-1 in a nonconference match on Thursday. Booth’s goal was assisted on a cross by Brayden Trello.

Luke DeWitt, Staunton boys soccer

The senior striker recorded a hat trick and added two assists as Staunton cruised to a 6-1 win at Vandalia in South Central Conference play on Thursday. DeWitt’s first two goals came in the first half when Staunton built a 3-0 lead. DeWitt got the assist on the Bulldogs’ second goal which was scored by Brody Hill.

Cameron Frye, Williamsville boys soccer

The senior forward scored four goals, including the 100th of his high school career, as Williamsville recorded a 10-0 shutout over Decatur St. Teresa in a nonconference boys soccer game on Tuesday. Frye scored all of his goals in the first half and Williamsville led 9-0 at the break.

Blaze Helton, Hillsboro football

The senior running back ran for 138 yards and two TDs on 24 attempts in Hillsboro’s rollicking 25-21 South Central Conference win over Carlinville. Helton scored the game-winning TD from 3 yards out with eight seconds left.

Cam'Ron Mitchell, Jacksonville football

The junior running back had a game-high 125 yards rushing and two TDs on 11 carries as Jacksonville beat Southeast 64-20 on Friday in a Central State Eight Conference matchup.

Ella Prince, South County volleyball

The senior racked up 24 digs and served five aces to lead South County past Calvary Academy 25-21, 25-14 in an MSM Conference match on Thursday.

Jack Swaney, Rochester football

The tight end caught seven passes from quarterback Keeton Reiss in a 59-22 win over Springfield High on Saturday at Southeast's Spartan Field. The junior transfer finished with 57 yards and one touchdown in his first game against his former team.

Michael Wilson, Jacksonville Routt football

The senior defensive lineman recovered two fumbles and returned one to the end zone in the Rockets' 49-6 Western Illinois Valley Conference win over Beardstown. He scooped up a high snap on a punt attempt and scored the game’s first touchdown on a five-yard return with 3 minutes 47 seconds left in the first quarter. Another Wilson fumble recovery led to a Kohen Hoots 20-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Dax Baptist for a 35-6 lead early in the third period.
