Escaped Plainview inmate captured in Coleman after 12-hour search

PLAINVIEW — Law enforcement in Coleman on Sunday captured an inmate who escaped from a state prison near Plainview Saturday night.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice and Plainview police, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, were looking for Trent Thompson, 22, who had last been seen at the Formby Unit in Plainview at approximately 11:14 p.m. Saturday, according to statements from the city of Plainview and the TDCJ.

Officials announced just after 11:30 Sunday morning Thompson had been captured and was in police custody. According to TDCJ, Thompson was apprehended around 11:15 a.m. Sunday in Coleman and will face felony escape charges.

Thompson is serving time for three counts of aggravated robbery out of Taylor County and Coleman County, as well as an aggravated assault on a public servant charge out of Coleman County, according to reports from KTXS in Abilene.

Some of his charges stem from a February 2022 armed robbery at a Coleman convenience store, as well as the theft of a vehicle and subsequent chase with law enforcement in March of 2022. During the chase, which began in Taylor County and ended in Coleman County to the south, Thompson was accused of using his vehicle to hit a Coleman County Sheriff's Department vehicle. He was soon arrested after a foot chase.

Officials asked the public not to approach Thompson while he was at large, but urged citizens to contact local law enforcement instead. More details about how Thompson escaped and how he was located were not immediately available as officials investigate the incident.
