Site plan approved for Abbott Manufacturing building projects

A site plan for an expansion project at Abbott Manufacturing that will include a second facility tower was unanimously approved Tuesday by the Sturgis Planning Commission.

The city received a site plan for review from Abbott Manufacturing Inc. for the property at 901 N. Centerville Road. Abbott is looking to build three additions to the existing building, parking area, truck loading area, storm water management system for new expansion, additional utilities, a new chemical drain line and site circulation improvements.

The three separate additions include a 35,000 square-foot expansion to the northeast corner of warehouse building for a new dryer 128 1/2 feet high. Developers said that only the dryer portion of this addition is at that height.

A 1,060 square-foot water treatment room and a 12,548 square-foot boiler and compressor addition is also slated for construction sometime next year. Additional development for the site will also include a new access drive from North Clay Street, utilities, a retention pond for expansion and a new chemical drain line.

At the planning commission meeting May 17, the existing building was granted a Class A nonconforming structure status due to the height of the building. With the approval of the Class A designation, it allows the new dryer to be constructed at the requested height.

Abbot has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration due to the proximity of the proposed tower of Kirsch Municipal Airport on any additional requirements necessary.

Planning commissioners Luis Perez, Rick Mahler and Gabe Alvez were absent from Tuesday's meeting.
