New Plan For Waltham Police Department HQ Gets Underway

Waltham's mayor tasked a committee with coming up with a plan for the Police Headquarters by Dec. 15.

WALTHAM, MA — Two days after the Waltham City Council voted to do away with the $7.2 million plan to renovate the Police Headquarters, arguing it needed a complete overhaul, the mayor has appointed a committee to come up with a new plan for the aging building by Dec. 15.

In a memo dated Oct. 3, Mayor Jeannette McCarthy appointed a seven person committee to address the police headquarters needs. She tasked the seven member committee with coming up with a site recommendation and a recommendation regarding the headquarters. She also directed them to give a recommendation about what should happen to staff at the police department during construction.

The previous recommendation that was just shot down last week had police using a building at the Fernald Site, pointing out there was no environmental study that showed it was safe for humans.

The mayor appointed four police officers, including the chief or deputy two city employees and two city councilors to the committee and allowed for the possibility that the police department might create their own internal committee, as well.

The mayor praised the Fire Department's chief and committee for their work toward a comprehensive plan for the Moody Street Fire Station.

"He can provide some pointers to you," she wrote in the memo.

On the police headquarter committee:

Chief Keith MacPherson, (or Deputy Kevin O'Connell), Lt. Rob Robillard, Det. Jorge Orta, Sgt. Dan Hart, Purchasing Agent Joseph Pedulla, Building Inspector Jon Millan, Ward 6 Councilor Sharline Nabulime, Ward 4 Councilor John McLaughlin.
