We’re moving from April to May with a bang. There is more to do than any one family can fit on the calendar, but let us help you plan ahead. “The Giver,” adapted by Eric Coble from the Newbery Award-winning book by Lois Lowry, is presented April 29 – May 22 at Asheville Community Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and at 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $26 each for adults and $15 each for ages 3 – 17. Mountain Science Expo Presents: Explore Your Arboretum is 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. April 30 at the North Carolina Arboretum. Attend nature walks, visit exhibit booths, attend field equipment demonstrations and aid scientists in learning more about the plants and animals that call North Carolina home. Beech’s Bloomin’ Craft Festival is noon – 5 p.m. April 30 at Beech Mountain. This family-friendly event will feature a variety of artisans and crafters outdoors at the Buckeye Recreation Center. Super Science Saturday is at 1:30 p.m. April 30 at Hands On! Children’s Museum in Hendersonville. Explore the world of chemistry and physics through interactive demonstrations and activities. For details, visit ncsciencefestival.org.

A Benefit Concert for Ukraine is at 8:30 p.m. April 30 at the Isis Music Hall. Expect a mix of genres including Americana, singer-songwriter and acoustic rock, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Humanitarian Aid Fund, which sends aid directly to four hospitals in Ukraine to help wounded and displaced soldiers and civilians, both adults and children, and to help displaced people in Ukraine. The event will include a silent auction with items from local businesses and artists, a merchandise table with traditional Ukrainian pysanky eggs and more. For tickets and details, visit

Asheville Jewish Community Center’s 15th Annual Falafel 5K – Get a free falafel when you run (or walk) in the event May 1. This competitive race is in person with a virtual option available, and it includes a race shirt and prizes for winners. To register, visit jcc-asheville.org/2022-falafel5k.
