Plane crashes into water off New Jersey coast

An aircraft plummeted into the waters of Long Beach Island, New Jersey, on Thursday afternoon, officials confirmed.

The plane was carrying at least three people and landed 1 mile from the coastline, according to NBC New York, which cited information from local law enforcement.

The Coast Guard's Mid-Atlantic branch confirmed the development.

"We have received a report of a plane crash off Long Beach Island, NJ. Coast Guard has diverted a helo from Air Station Atlantic City and crews from Station Atlantic City and Station Barnegat Light," the branch tweeted. "Updates to follow."
