Plane tickets to the Bahamas results in embezzlement charges for Hampstead woman

A Hampstead woman was sentenced to 67 to 93 months in prison after being found guilty of embezzlement.

Abigail Hollis, 46, was accused of embezzling more than $200,000 from her employer American Fire Technologies LLC between Dec. 2015 and Dec. 2018, according to a news release from District Attorney Ben David.

Hollis used a company credit card issued in her name to make unauthorized purchases, including two plane tickets to the Bahamas for a family member, the release states. She inadvertently saved this information on a network drive, and it was noticed by a co-worker.

“Thanks to the sharp eye of a co-worker this employee’s financial crimes were uncovered and were able to be prosecuted. This case is a reminder for corporations to have verifications in place for all expenditures and to implement review of employee purchases," David said in the release.

The North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys Financial Crimes Unit handled the prosecution of the case due to the volume of records it produced and the complex nature of the investigation.

Hollis was convicted by a New Hanover County Jury following a seven-day trial.
