Planet Fitness holds grand opening for Martinsville location

MARTINSVILLE — The city of Martinsville officially gained a new workout center Friday as it celebrated the grand opening of Planet Fitness.

Mayor Kenny Costin and the Martinsville Chamber of Commerce gathered with Planet Fitness staff, including district manager Tyler Cox, to hold a ribbon ceremony, which included a tour of the city's newest facility. In addition to the celebration, NASCAR driver Joey Logano's stock car was featured in the parking lot for all visitors to see. Logano has been partnered with Planet Fitness since 2015.

The opening has been a long-awaited day for Cox, who is excited to finally have the location open a year after buying the property located at 2082 Burton Lane, within the Martinsville Plaza.

"It's been on the agenda for a while, so actually getting down here and opening has been awesome," Cox said. "Everybody's so excited. We were doing presale out of the office next door selling memberships and everybody that came in was telling us how the whole community is excited. Now that we're actually open, and mayor Costin is in here working out, this is awesome."

As mentioned, Costin didn't waste much time trying out the equipment. During the tour, he worked with a variety of machines, ending with a brief time in the massage chair. Needless to say, he's excited for the new addition and what it brings to Martinsville.

"Planet Fitness is an icon in the physical fitness world, the equipment they have here is state-of-the-art, "Costin said. "It's a very positive thing for Martinsville and it's always exciting to have a ribbon cutting for a new business. A company such as Planet Fitness willing to make an investment into our city shows that we are doing things right, we are having growth and the future looks very bright for us."

Those who are interested in joining have the choice of two memberships, the classic or the black card. With the classic membership, which is a rather affordable at $10 per month, members get access to the Martinsville facility, Planet Fitness mobile application and free in-club fitness training.

Black card members get access to the aforementioned perks, plus the ability to bring a guest anytime, access to all Planet Fitness,' the hydromassage and massage chairs, tanning equipment, total body enhancement and 50% off select drinks. The black card membership is $25 per month. Both tiers include an annual fee of $39, and both have a one-time enrollment fee of $1.

The gym has a wide array of hours, being open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays. As in line with their motto, it's a non-committal membership, so members can dissolve their membership anytime without being charged a fee.

The addition of Planet Fitness only adds to an already stacked lineup of physical fitness centers in Martinsville, which also features the YMCA, Reps Fitness, Anytime Fitness and Raise the Bar Fitness.

"We have several good physical fitness places in town, and this is just going to add to the stock that we have," Costin said. "Between the other four fitness places, somebody should be able to find somewhere to work out any hour they want."

As for Cox and Planet Fitness, they hope for a bright future for its new facility in Martinsville.

"We came into the community and are hoping for the best," Cox said. "We've done well so far, and hopefully more people show up and we keep it going."
