Planned Parenthood Collaborates With Artist Alicia Eggert to Illuminate the Importance of Abortion Access

Tomorrow marks the 49th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision which established the constitutional right to safe, legal abortion. As the US Supreme Court weighs its decision, the fate of Roe v. Wade is at stake, and Planned Parenthood is invoking action through a cross-country tour as a means to to illuminate the importance of abortion access at a critical moment in history. If Roe v. Wade is overturned this summer, 26 states could introduce new measures to control reproductive rights by removing abortion access for more than 36 million women.

To generate awareness surrounding this pivotal decision and demand access to abortion remains legal and constitutionally-protected, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America has collaborated with Alicia Eggert, a Washington, DC-based artist — whose work gives material form to language and time. As part of the initiative, the interdisciplinary artist has created a series dubbed “OURS,” a traveling light-sculpture installation as way to cast light upon the fight for abortion rights with three, flashing neon signs that read as: “Our Bodies,” “Our Futures,” “Our Abortions.”

In the video above, see how “OURS” made its first stop in front of the US Supreme Court to draw awareness surrounding Roe v. Wade.
