Plans approved for new sporting goods store in Glen Carbon. Here are the details

Glen Carbon officials have approved site plans for a new Dick’s Sporting Goods store.

During a Sept. 25 meeting of the Glen Carbon Village Board, Tim Lowe of the Staenberg Group gave a presentation that included details for the addition of the sporting goods retailer and other proposed plans for Phase Two of the Orchard Town Center development.

Lowe said the Staenberg Group “stayed true to what we originally promised” – bringing new-to-market tenants to the development.

“We didn’t want to recycle tenants. We didn’t move people around in Glen Carbon, and we don’t wanna steal people from Edwardsville,” Lowe said at the meeting.

Phase One, which is nearly complete, included securing an anchor – Meijer – plus four outlot businesses.

The four businesses are Chick-fil-A, Olive Garden, Plaza Tire and Club Car Wash.

Dick’s Sporting Goods secured a site in the south lot of Orchard Town Center in June.

“We really felt that Dick’s Sporting Goods was really a niche that was not here in the market,” said Lowe. “There’s no quality sporting goods in this market, and Dick’s does a … great job … done a lot of really cool things. They’re putting a lot of interactive things in their store now.”

“It’s really the place for higher end, better quality apparel and sporting goods.”

Dick’s Sporting Goods plans to open in spring 2025.

Lowe also spoke about the addition of 7,000 square feet of smaller retail shops that will be adjacent to Dick’s Sporting Goods and a separate restaurant building on the southern end that could house up to three restaurant tenants.

The southern end of the development near the existing bike trail will also have a small pocket park with space for small events and activities.

The restaurant will face the park and include a deck with an overhang on the back of the building that overlooks the park.

Lowe said that the park area will be built at the same time as Dick’s, and when Dick’s opens in 2025, all of Outlot 13 will open.

He also said that the Staenberg Group is making progress on finding tenants and is “very close on a number of outlot deals.”

However, he is currently not able to announce any new businesses until agreements are signed.

Phase Two traffic improvements, which are currently awaiting design approval, entail the intersection at Robinson, a right turn lane at QuikTrip, a right turn lane north on Troy Road and some work on Governor’s Parkway, according to Lowe.

Updates will be reported as new information becomes available.
