Plans for the former Jeffboat site have been finalized. Here's what owners anticipate

Finalized renderings for the former Jeffboat site across the river in Jeffersonville, Indiana, were revealed Thursday, showing the best look yet at how developers envision the future of the site as a mixed-use space dedicated to commercial offerings and green space for residents.

Officials with the Old JB Redevelopment Project showed plans for the 80-acre space include a marina, an amphitheater, an observation tower, and a crescent deck, which developers hope will be used to its fullest potential alongside spaces for businesses and entertainment options.

"Jeffboat has been an integral part of our community for over 100 years and we're very excited about this opportunity to revitalize this property," said Mike Ellis, CEO of American Commercial Barge Line.

Ellis said the plans, which have been in development for the past 18 months and could run over $1 billion in total costs, aim to give the community a space and amenities "that improve your quality of life and extend the connection to downtown Louisville."

Mayor Mike Moore said the city and the developers have taken the time to listen to the community while developing the plans for the site and feels confident the revitalized space will be able to accommodate residents.

"There's something for everybody in this plan," Moore said. "It's going to change our state and it's gonna change it for the better."

Ellis said a developer has not yet been chosen for the site, but plans to remain a partner to the chosen company to ensure the development remains faithful to the renderings. Officials are hopeful a developer will be found by the end of December or in early 2024.

What is Jeffboat?

The Jeffboat site used to be a vital point in the nation's barge industry, being the second-largest barge building site in the country and employing roughly 1,300 people, Jeffersonville officials previously told The Courier Journal.

The last boat rolled off Jeffboat's assembly line in 2018 when the company shut down after nearly 200 years of operation.

The site sat vacant in the interim, though plans to redevelop it have been in the works for years, Moore said.

Jeffersonville officials announced last year it had partnered with American Commercial Barge Line, to fund a master plan for its redevelopment.
