Plans underway for SpringFest, vendors needed

Mar. 29—A new festival is in the planning stage for this spring in Washington. Discover Downtown Washington has set May 6 for its first ever Springfest.

"We are very heavy in the plans for that," said organizer Amber Warden with Discover Downtown Washington. "There are a lot of plans still up in the air on it. One thing we are working on is trying to get the fire department to bring a truck downtown for the kids to tour. We are also looking at the possibility of setting up an obstacle course for the kids."

With the Commons construction now underway, the project will be held in the parking lot behind the Core Center and in the breezeway area that connects the lot to Main Street.

"In the breezeway we will have local art from our high school students. There will be live music by Gage Keillor and Alan Pancake and there may be a couple more artists," said Warden. "We are discussing a booth that is a toy swap for kids. We are hoping for some face painting. There will also be vendors with various booths."

Right now, there is room for more people to sign up for booths. People who are interested can contact Warden at the Daviess County Economic Development Office at 812-254-1500 or you can sign up for a booth online. The cost is $65.

"We have two vendors now," said Warden. "So, there is plenty of room for more people. We will also be doing a spring-time bake-off that will be hosted by the YMCA Youth Council. People can register online for that. The registration fee is $20 and there will be prizes of up to $150 for the winner."

The Springfest committee has also reached out to the Daviess County CEO class in hopes that they will do a preview of their final project, unveiling their business ideas.

"It's a free event for the public," said Warden. "This is our first big event of this year for Discover Downtown Washington. This is something that the community used to do. We are just trying to bring that back, let folks gather downtown for some fun and enjoy the weather."

Warden says the organization is also looking for some volunteers to help with the set up and break down for the event.
