Fountain Square's roller rink has become a hit in downtown Cincinnati. However, when Queen City natives aren't showing off their skating skills, they can play pickleball at the popular location during select hours in April.

Pickleball is taking over Greater Cincinnati, with a complex, the Pickle Lodge, opening in West Chester last month. But my colleagues, Rasputin Todd, Haadiza Ogwude and Victoria Moorwood, and I had never played, so we took the 10-minute walk from our downtown office to Fountain Square on Thursday and tried out the fast-growing sport.

What is pickleball? And why is it such a big deal in Cincinnati?

It was challenging at first, but the competition eventually got pretty heated. We made a TikTok in which we talked trash in the most Cincinnati way possible. Among the insults?

  • "Do you like goetta? Well, maybe you should get a (goetta) backhand."

  • "You're swinging and missing like the Reds."

  • "You're the third best one here. I'm gonna call you 98 Degrees."

  • "You're playing so bad, Travis Kelce would call you a jabroni."
