Playoff chases begin in SCHSL for baseball, softball, soccer

Apr. 30—The race to a state championship begins this week for four more spring sports in the South Carolina High School League.

Brackets were finalized over the weekend for baseball, soccer and softball, and the Aiken Standard coverage area has dozens of teams who made it into their respective fields. Baseball and softball are double-elimination tournaments, while soccer is single-elimination.

Baseball

Class AAAA

The North Augusta Yellow Jackets secured a top seed in the Class AAAA playoffs by winning the Region 4-AAAA championship. The Jackets will open the postseason Monday at home against Westside, the No. 4 seed from Region 1-AAAA.

Joining the Jackets in Upper State Bracket 1 is Aiken High, the No. 4 seed from Region 4-AAAA. The Hornets will be on the road Monday to face Region 1-AAAA champion Greenwood.

Down in Upper State Bracket 2 is South Aiken, which is the No. 3 seed from Region 4-AAAA after losing a tiebreaker to Airport. The T-Breds will hit the road Monday to face Greenville, the No. 2 seed from Region 1-AAAA.

Class AA

The Strom Thurmond Rebels rolled through Region 3-AA to earn a top seed in the Class AA playoffs, which they will begin Tuesday at home against Region 4-AA No. 4 Columbia High.

Fox Creek earned the No. 4 seed from Region 3-AA and will be on the road Tuesday to face Mid-Carolina, the Region 2-AA champion.

In the Lower State, Barnwell is the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AA and will hit the road Tuesday to visit Region 5-AA No. 2 Buford.

Class A

The Williston-Elko Blue Devils are region champions again, claiming the top seed from Region 4-A. The Blue Devils will be at home Tuesday against Brashier Middle College, the No. 4 seed from Region 1-A.

Ridge Spring-Monetta was the region's No. 3 seed, and the Trojans will be on the road Tuesday for a first-round game at Region 1-A No. 2 St. Joseph's.

Wagener-Salley is the No. 4 seed from Region 4-A, and the War Eagles' playoff opener will be Tuesday at Region 1-A champion Christ Church.

Boys' Soccer

Class AAAA

Defending Class AAAA Lower State champion North Augusta is a top seed in the Upper State this year after winning the Region 4-AAAA title. The Yellow Jackets have a first-round bye, and Wednesday they will host a second-round game against the Indian Land-Wade Hampton winner from Monday.

South Aiken was the No. 2 team from Region 4-AAAA, and the T-Breds will play Monday at home against Region 1-AAAA No. 3 Easley. The winner of that game will face Catawba Ridge in the second round.

Aiken High is the No. 3 seed from Region 4-AAAA, and the Hornets will be on the road Monday at Region 1-AAAA No. 2 Greenville. The winner of that game will face Riverside in the second round.

Class AA

Silver Bluff is the seventh seed in the Upper State after finishing in second in Region 3-AA. The Bulldogs will open the playoffs Monday at home against 10th-seeded Landrum.

Fox Creek finished third in Region 3-AA and is the No. 12 seed in the Upper State. The Predators have a road game Monday at fifth-seeded Saluda.

In the Lower State, Barnwell is the 10 seed after finishing fourth in Region 6-AA. The Warhorses will be on the road Monday against region rival and No. 7 seed Woodland.

Class A

Ridge Spring-Monetta finished second in Region 4-A and is a No. 8 seed in the Class A playoffs. The Trojans will have a first-round bye and will play a second-round game Wednesday at St. Joseph's.

Girls' Soccer

Class AAAA

Region 4-AAAA champion South Aiken has a top seed and a first-round bye in the Class AAAA playoffs. The T-Breds will host a second-round game Thursday against the Catawba Ridge-Riverside winner from Tuesday.

Aiken High finished third in Region 4-AAAA and will have a road game Tuesday against Greenville, the No. 2 seed from Region 1-AAAA.

Class AA

Fox Creek went undefeated in Region 3-AA play to claim the league title, earning the Predators a top seed in the Class AA playoffs. The SCHSL bracket has the Predators in the Lower State, and Tuesday they will host Lewisville.

Strom Thurmond was the region's second-place finisher, and the Rebels are the No. 8 seed in the Upper State. They will host Newberry on Tuesday.

Silver Bluff finished third in region play and is the No. 12 seed in the Upper State. The Bulldogs will be on the road Tuesday at Dixie.

Softball

Class AAAA

Defending Class AAAA champion North Augusta is a top seed again after winning the Region 4-AAAA title. The Jackets are in Upper State bracket 1, and on Tuesday they will host Region 1-AAAA No. 4 Easley.

Midland Valley finished second in region play after splitting the regular-season series against North Augusta. The Mustangs are in Upper State bracket 2, and on Tuesday they will host Region 1-AAAA No. 3 Pickens.

Also in Upper State Bracket 2 is South Aiken, the third-place finisher in Region 4-AAAA. The T-Breds will hit the road Tuesday to face Greenwood, the No. 2 seed from Region 1-AAAA.

Class AA

Strom Thurmond ran through Region 3-AA with an unbeaten record, and the top-seeded Rebels will be at home Wednesday against Region 4-AA No. 4 Keenan.

Fox Creek is the No. 2 seed from Region 3-AA, and the Predators will be at home Wednesday against Region 4-AA No. 3 Columbia High.

Silver Bluff is the region's No. 4 seed, and the Bulldogs will be on the road Wednesday to face Region 2-AA champion Mid-Carolina.

In the Lower State, Barnwell earned a top seed and first-round bye as Region 6-AA champion. The Warhorses will be at home Friday against the winner of Wednesday's game between Andrews and Cheraw.

Class A

The Wagener-Salley War Eagles are a top seed in Class A after wrapping up their eighth consecutive region championship. The War Eagles will be at home Wednesday against St. Joseph's, the No. 4 seed from Region 1-A.

Ridge Spring-Monetta is the No. 2 seed from Region 4-A, and the Trojans will be at home Wednesday against Region 1-A No. 3 Southside Christian.

Williston-Elko is Region 4-A's No. 3 seed, and the Blue Devils will have a road game Wednesday at Region 1-A No. 2 Brashier Middle College.
