PlayStation Plus Essential's free games for July 2023 have been announced.

Essential, the base tier of Sony's subscription service that enables gamers to play online, lets players claim a handful of free games every month. Once added to your account, games can be downloaded and played as long as the subscription is active (which includes letting it lapse and re-subscribing).

Available to claim from Tuesday, July 4, this month's biggest title is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (PS5|PS4), which is interesting considering that rival Microsoft is trying to buy CoD publisher Activision.

The game features a campaign set in the 1980s and inspired by real-life events, and there are your typical Multiplayer and Zombies modes as well.

Ahead of its highly-anticipated sequel releasing later this year, Alan Wake Remastered (PS5|PS4) is another big-name title this month. Play as the titular novelist as he investigates his wife's disappearance and enters a world of supernatural phenomena and thriller twists, set in the same universe as the highly-acclaimed Control, from the same developers.

Finally, there's Endling - Extinction Is Forever (PS5|PS4), in which players guide a family of foxes through a world where they're the last of their kind. Gameplay combines stealthily avoiding trouble, being a good parent to your litter and going 'awww' as you do.

Multiple games will also leave the PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers on July 18.

They are: Stray, Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, BioShock Remastered trilogy, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, Marvel's Avengers, Raiden V: Director's Cut, Rogue Stormers and Fluster Cluck.

Some of these games, such as BioShock and Borderlands, were free with Essential in previous years, so if you've been diligent in claiming the monthly freebies, you won't lose access.
