Plea agreement expected in Falmouth bank robbery. Here's what to know

An Edgartown man is set to plead guilty to one count of armed bank robbery in connections with an April 8 robbery at the Rockland Trust Bank off Davis Straits in Falmouth.

Petar Petyoshin, 40, filed his plea in federal court on Sept. 5, according to the federal court docket. He faces anywhere between 60 to 108 months in prison and a restitution fine of $17,254.

Petyoshin, a water systems operator for the Oak Bluffs Water District, is alleged to have entered Rockland Trust, located at 20 Davis Straits, around 9:05 a.m. April 8, armed with a handgun. During the incident, Petyoshin said he was carrying a bomb, according to accounts from Falmouth police and the Massachusetts State Police.

Witnesses to the bank robbery said Petyoshin entered the bank, and showed a firearm, as well as a device that he said was a bomb, Assistant Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael Giardino said during a May 23 arraignment. Bank employees and patrons were zip-tied at the conclusion of the robbery. The suspect then left the bank, and stole a motor vehicle that belonged to a bank customer, he said.

How much did Rockland Trust lose in the robbery?

According to the court docket, the bank lost more than $21,000 in the robbery.

Later, police officers found the stolen vehicle abandoned at Teaticket Park, nearly a mile from the bank. Authorities were able to identify Petyoshin as the suspect through witness descriptions and video surveillance.

The next hearing for Petyoshin will be held on October 10, federal court records showed.
