Pleasanton Nordstrom Closes Permanently: Report

PLEASANTON, CA —When Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton finally reopens after stay-at-home orders are eased, Nordstrom will remain closed, according to a report in Business Insider. The Pleasanton store is one of 16 that the company has decided to close permanently.

Nordstrom closed all department stores and Nordstrom Rack outlet stores in March because of coronavirus. On Wednesday, the retail giant announced that 16 of the stores will be permanently shuttered.

Neil Saunders, the managing director of GlobalData Retail, noted the role of Nordstrom as an anchor store when he told Business Insider, "It is a blow for malls already severely bruised by the crisis and slowdown in retail."

Several restaurants at Stoneridge are currently open for takeout or delivery including California Pizza Kitchen, Cheesecake Factory, The Counter, and P.F. Chang's.

While California entered phase two of plans to ease coronavirus closures, Alameda and Contra Costa counties, along with most of the Bay Area, are not following the loosening of restrictions.

On Wednesday, Nordstrom said the closures are a result of both the coronavirus, and market trends pushing more shoppers online.

"We've been investing in our digital and physical capabilities to keep pace with rapidly changing customer expectations," said CEO Erik Nordstrom. "The impact of COVID-19 is only accelerating the importance of these capabilities in serving customers."

In fact, Nordstrom said that more than half of company sales now come through their website.

In the announcement Wednesday, the company also touted a restructuring to their support roles and corporate organization, which they say will save about $150 million in expenses. The company says the move will allow for "greater speed and flexibility" but did not outline exactly how those roles will be affected.[RECIRC]

Other East Bay Nordstrom department and outlet stores are in Dublin, Emeryville, Fremont, Pleasant Hill, San Leandro, and Walnut Creek.
