Plenty of road salt leftovers thanks to mild winter in Ashland County

Ashland County Engineer Ed Meixner briefed the county commissioners on a pair of projects dealing with road projects on Thursday.

A resolution was passed giving authorization for the county to participate in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s annual road salt bid. About 2,000 tons of road salt will be delivered to the Ashland and Perrysville salt sheds as well as other township and village locations.

A bid from Melway Paving of $225,400 was accepted for road sealing, which will begin in July.

Meixner said in an average winter the county uses about 4,000-5,000 tons of salt.

“The mild winter that we had and with the contract we had last year … we are full,” said Meixner on the road salt availability. “We are so full, that depending on the winter, I could probably get by without buying any salt for next year. This past winter we used about 1,300 tons of salt.”

Meixner said the Melway bid will cover about 48 miles of road sealing.

“The mileage varies depending on road condition,” he said. “We have used Melway in the past and had good success with them.”

Completion date for the sealing is Aug. 31.

Also on Thursday, commissioners:

  • Approved a new purchase order policy that clarifies how long purchase orders last and how and when they should be issued as requested by Cindy Funk, auditor.

  • Approved a policy to exempt purchases of $1,000 or less from the need for a certificate of funds and/or purchase order, also requested by Funk.

  • Entered into a contract with Rising Son Company for $109,489 for the Village of Savannah sidewalk project.

Commissioners will meet 9 a.m. Thursday in the Commissioner’s Conference Room on the second floor of the County Office Building. The meetings are open to the public. They are livestreamed on the Ashland County Government Facebook page.
