Plots for rent at Noblesville community garden, volunteers sought

The managers of a revitalized community garden in Noblesville will hold two community meetings to recruit volunteers and sign-up residents interested in renting plots.

The meetings are scheduled from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, and from 6:30-8 p.m. April 6 at Mill Top Banquet & Conference Center, 802 Mulberry St., Noblesville.

The garden on city property at 3rd and Pleasant streets had been a dependable source of fresh vegetables for the needy for nine years but Noblesville shut it down last May, saying it had been neglected and posed a nuisance.

The garden caretakers disputed that allegation but its lease had run out with the city and talks to renew it had stalled. A new non-profit has since signed a lease.

Jason Hand, a member of the Noblesville Community Garden Inc., said 40% of the gardening space will be used to grow vegetables for the community and the rest will be allotted to gardeners interested in renting a plot for their own vegetable production.

Along with vegetables, a pollinator garden will be supplemented with additional native plants to increase the honeybee population near the garden and increase future harvests, Hand said.

The garden was also used by students and educational non-profits, such as the Ivy Tech Noblesville and Girl Scouts of Central Indiana.
