Plows Clear Heavy Snow in Northern California's Tahoe City

Heavy snow was falling on mountainous areas of Northern California on Sunday, December 26, stranding drivers and causing dangerous travel in the mountains and foothills, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

Videos taken by Scott Gaffney in Tahoe City, on the northwest shore of Lake Tahoe, shows snow plows working to clear roads during Sunday’s snowfall. By late Monday morning, several roadways in the area were closed.

On Monday morning, about 15 miles northwest of Tahoe City, researchers at the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab near Donner Summit reported a new record for total snowfall in December.

“With a 24-hour official snow total of 38.9 inches at the lab, we have smashed the previous record of 179 inches of snow in December set in 1970! Snow rates are still heavy and we could even break the 200” mark today!" the researchers tweeted. Credit: Scott Gaffney via Storyful
