It was 16 years ago that the Jonna family, previously known for their Merchant of Vino stores, entered the grocery business, opening their first Plum Market store.

Now with 25 locations in multiple formats, from full-service grocery stores to outlets in office buildings and in Detroit Metropolitan Airport, family-owned Plum Market is marking its “Sweet 16” anniversary with customers in mind.

"We are thrilled to be celebrating our “Sweet 16” with our guests," said Matthew Jonna, founder, and CEO of Plum Market. "We want to show our appreciation by offering discounts, giveaways, and fun events all weekend long. We hope everyone will join us in the festivities."

The “Sweet 16” celebration will take place only at the four metro Detroit full-service Plum Market stores this Friiday through Sunday. Two stores celebrating the anniversary are in Ann Arbor. The others are the Bloomfield Township and West Bloomfield stores.

For the celebration, these stores, according to Plum Market, will feature discounts and buy-one-get-one offers on brands throughout the stores such as select Zingerman’s items and Niman Ranch products. There will also be free sampling across storewide departments and swag while supplies last.

Through its Plum Market app, there’s a $5 off $16 coupon that is valid Friday through Sunday.

On Saturday, complimentary cupcakes will be handed out to the first 250 guests starting at 11 a.m. Customers will also be able to sip samples of Moet Champagne and enjoy food samplings from different departments throughout the store. An hourly raffle of prizes, such as a Yeti cooler filled with Waterloo sodas, boxes of See’s Candies, and a $250 Plum Market gift card,  takes place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday.

The idea and concept behind Plum Market came from co-founders and brothers, Marc and Matthew Jonna, sons of Edward Jonna who founded Merchant of Vino stores in metro Detroit.

Plum Markets are known for its wide selection of natural and organic lines of products, gourmet and prepared food offerings. An emphasis is also on locally produced food offerings. The company is based in Farmington Hills.

Plum Market's multi-format stores are across Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Texas, and Florida. A full-service Miami store opened in January. According to a news release, new stores are to open in California and Washington, DC.
