Plymouth show: 'She Loves Me' set to open at Priscilla Beach Theatre

PLYMOUTH – Priscilla Beach Theatre continues its season with the musical "She Loves Me," a romantic comedy based on the short story that inspired the hit movie "You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

The eight-show engagement runs May 27 to June 4.

Adapted from Miklos Laszlo’s Hungarian light comedy “Parfumerie,” the show centers on a pair of contentious colleagues, George and Amalia, who work in a Budapest perfume shop of the 1930s. On the job, the not-so-dynamic duo bickers and butts heads. Off the clock, both seek solace in the "lonely hearts" section of the newspapers. Each strikes up a correspondence with an anonymous admirer. Neither knows the identity of their "Dear Friend."

The play was also the inspiration for the 1940 film “The Shop Around the Corner” with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan.

The award-winning musical was written by Joe Masteroff, who also wrote the book for "Cabaret," with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, who also wrote the score for “Fiddler on the Roof.”

“It’s been said that 'She Loves Me' is one of the most charming musicals ever written, and I would agree with that,” says Bob Malone, owner of Priscilla Beach Theatre. “It’s funny, sweet, beautiful, endearing and yet surprises you with life situations that aren’t expected in a romantic comedy."
